Kristy, Academic and English as a Foreign Language Tutor

Kristy has 15 years teaching experience in primary schools as a classroom teacher and teaching SEN. She likes to get to know her students to understand how they learn best, to know what they find challenging and what their goals are. Being a visual and kinesthetic learner herself, she is aware that each child has different learning styles. She enjoys thinking of creative ways to suit her student’s needs and to help a student understand a challenging concept. As a tutor, she likes to be able to work at each child’s pace, making the learning experience meaningful and enjoyable. To see that moment a student “gets it”, is incredibly rewarding for her.

After working with pupils last year who were beginner level English, she completed a TEFL course. Having lived in The Netherlands and learning Dutch, she knows what it is like to want to communicate, yet feel frustrated by limited vocabulary and knowledge of putting together a simple sentence. She finds it rewarding helping pupils (children and adults) build their knowledge of the English language and so be able to speak with renewed confidence and ability.

Kristy aims to create a love of learning in her students, as well as develop their confidence and academic abilities. Her experience teaching children between the ages of 4 and 11 has been very rewarding and has also provided her with numerous learning opportunities that have helped her grow as a teacher and a person.

Kristy has taught in South Africa, England, The Netherlands and Australia. Teaching in different countries has given her the opportunity to travel, as well as work with and learn from a wonderful variety of teachers and students.

Kristy is married and has two cats, Lily and Lana. She enjoys spending time playing with her nephews and nieces. In her free time, she spends time reading, gardening, building puzzles and visiting National Trust properties and gardens. She loves exploring new places and sitting down for a cup of tea with a scone.

OUR THOUGHTS ON KRISTY

Kristy is a passionate and creative teacher who has a wonderfully kind manner that really engages children and gently challenges them to exceed their own learning expectations.

OTHERS’ THOUGHTS ON KRISTY

“Kristy always goes above and beyond and creates a warm, caring and nurturing environment in which students thrive. Kristy has many strengths but what I found to be her best asset is her ability to utilise her empathetic, positive attitude to interact effectively with students. Kristy exemplifies the qualities of an extraordinary teacher. For students that were struggling she provided extra instructional support before class times and at break times.. Every aspect of her teaching is thought out to the last detail; instruction, assessment, interaction, communication, documentation, administration and classroom management are just some of her areas of expertise as far as teaching is concerned.” - Anette Mattson, former colleague and parent of a pupil taught by Kristy

“With a kind and gentle, yet confident demeanour she interacts with people naturally, connecting with every person she meets in a meaningful manner.Kristy takes time to get to know all of her students as individuals academically, socially, and emotionally. She demonstrates a genuine care that the children feel instantly in her presence.

Kristy holds her students to high standards of expectation and they consistently rise to it as she sets targets at the optimal level of challenge for each child. Kristy explains, models, and provides experiences for children to construct meaning of concepts in differentiated ways in order to reach all students.Kristy uses what she knows about each child socially and emotionally in order to make decisions about how to interact with them on an individual level so that every child has the opportunity and appropriate learning conditions to progress.” - Lyn Taggart, former colleague

As with all our tutors, Kristy is fully DBS certified.
