Private Academic Tuition Sussex

How We Teach

Our experienced tutors at Discover and Be are passionate about providing a creative, child-centred approach to teaching and learning. We can offer a BESPOKE, fun-filled and varied tuition programme for your child. We can teach in your home so that your child can feel at ease in his or her own home. Our teachers work right across East Sussex and West Sussex too including towns like Haywards Heath and Lewes

One to One Tuition

Would your child benefit from regular, one-to-one support and tuition in a specific area of the curriculum? Perhaps he or she needs a confidence boost or help with exam technique in the run-up to SATS or a scholarship exam? We can help your child achieve confidence, independence and success in his or her learning.

In our tutoring sessions, we develop skills and confidence in Reading, Writing and Maths through the use of games, creative learning and fun resources.  We encourage you, the parent / carer, to be involved, wherever possible, in the teaching and learning process, so that you feel confident in supporting your child as he or she learns.

Who are we?

We are an experienced, enthusiastic and qualified team of teachers who use fun, effective methods to develop your child’s skills and confidence in order to unlock his or her potential. We tutor children aged 4 years upwards, from the Early Years Foundation Stage through to Key Stage 3.

Where do we teach?

We are locally based and are able to offer tuition for Maths, English and Literacy and Science across East and West Sussex, to include Haywards Heath, Brighton, Crawley and more. For more information please get in touch to discuss your child's needs: our friendly team is here to help. Our tutors come to you so that your child can benefit from a supportive and encouraging working relationship, in the comfort of their own home.

Age Groups

We are able to teach ages from 5 to 11. We find private tuition for 5 and 6 year olds is often very popular but we also see amazing results right through the primary age range so please get in touch for more information.

Private Tuition 5-7 Year Olds

At this age our tutors will work to consolidate all the lessons and skills that were acquired during the early years period. We make sure that pupils have a solid grasp of the skills like counting, number recognition and basic linguistic and reading skills. Much of the work we do at this age is about reinforcing and building through the use of games, interactive activities and more. We have a wide range of resources some are tried and tested and others are newer ideas that we feel yield great results.

Private Tuition 7 to 11 Year Olds and beyond

One-to-one lessons at this age need to be stimulating, challenging and enjoyable to make sure the pupil is really engaged and benefiting. We think it important to mix lessons up a little from time to time. This can be achieved by teaching in different places for example; we have been known to take our pupils on a little road trip after agreeing this with the parent or guardian of course.

Another key part of tuition for 7 to 11 year olds is about not just building on KS1 but identifying areas that may need extra work. This will help avoid any issues regarding falling behind so while learning is always looking ahead it is critical to reinforce and make sure past subjects are well covered.

Due to high demand, we have cherry picked a strong team of GCSE and A Level subject tutors who use their teaching expertise, subject knowledge and charisma to support, challenge and inspire older pupils. Please get in touch if you would like to find out more about our GCSE and A Level tutors.

What can we do for your child?

We believe that individual tuition is for everyone.  Not only is it a wonderful form of support for a child who needs to review areas of his or her learning, it is just as valuable to a child who is ready to take new steps to discover their true potential.  We can offer support in the form of weekly term time lessons or flexi holiday tutoring.

We work hard to meet the needs of each individual child while making sure that our lessons are engaging, inspiring, fun and challenging for the learner.  Following a FREE phone consultation, we will arrange an initial informal assessment conducted by our academic tutor coordinator, Sheila.

"Sheila was my tutor leading up to my entrance exams and SATS. I really like Sheila, she explained things slowly and helped me when I didn't understand things. We always had fun in the lesson too. She helped me to understand fractions which I was really stuck on. I would recommend having Sheila as your tutor because she will help you understand and also have fun too!" - Alicia (Year 6 pupil)

Initial Assessment – what to expect

Sheila, as academic tutor coordinator, will arrange a suitable time to come and meet you and your child to conduct an initial detailed assessment.  Sheila will get to know your child in the comfort of his or her own home and note down any concerns and /or thoughts and feelings you and your child may have in relation to his or her learning and school life.  Sheila will use various methods, including baseline assessment, to assess the level at which your child is working. She will provide detailed parent feedback and an agreed action plan to support your child as they move forward with their learning.  The length of this initial session will vary depending on the needs of the individual child. Sheila will then allocate the most suitable tutor to work with your child. Rest assured, the assessment is conducted in a relaxed, fun and informal manner so that your child feels comfortable and enjoys the session.

Does my child need tutoring?

Tutoring really is for everyone. Our lessons are individually designed for each child. We cater for pupils who need to be challenged and we cater for those that require support in a specific area of the curriculum or globally, but above all we work with your child to build their confidence and make learning meaningful and enjoyable for them.

How long is each session?

Each academic session is an hour long.

Is the tutor a qualified teacher?

Yes.  All our academic tutors are qualified and experienced teachers with full knowledge of the curriculum.

Are the hours flexible?

In term time lessons take place with the same tutor at the same time each week at an agreed time convenient to you.

During holidays periods lesson times are flexible.

How does the tutor know what my child needs?

Firstly we provide an initially phone consolation to discuss what you are looking for and what you feel your child needs. Then we carry out an initial consultation in your home with your child. We use games and conversation to allow the child to relax and share their thoughts about their education. Once they feel comfortable we use a reading test to give us a base line to begin from. We also give the child a chance to share what they feel they would like help with. This is a powerful tool for us to help them. The results of the reading test, any observations and our recommendations are all fed back to you, the parent, verbally as part of the 90min consultation.

My child has exams coming up. Can you help?

Yes. We cover the work required for the Year 6 SATs, the 11+ / pre tests (including non verbal reasoning), Year 8 Common Entrance, GCSEs and A Levels.

My child is struggling with confidence, what can I do?

One to one tuition is a great way to help build your child’s confidence. Private tuition provides a safe space and opportunity for pupils to ask as many questions as they like and discuss their learning openly. We feel that having the confidence to try new things and to not be afraid to make and learn from mistakes is the key to successful education.

When do lessons take place?

Lessons mostly take place after school hours during the week and at weekends. However we also offer home schooling sessions during the day.

Where do lessons take place?

Lessons take place in the comfort of the pupil’s own home. This may be inside in an open space, at a table or in the garden. Some tutors also offer tuition from their homes.

Will my child enjoy the lessons?

Yes. We aim for our lessons to be fun, creative and engaging. We use a variety of games, technology and resources to keep lessons upbeat, meaningful and interesting.

What are the benefits of 1 to 1 tuition?

1 to 1 support from an experienced and knowledgeable tutor can make a huge difference to a pupil’s confidence and enthusiasm for learning. Tutors can help pupils excel in their favourite subjects; tutors can also provide invaluable support to those pupils who find various subjects challenging. Our bespoke approach encourages all pupils to reach their potential in a nurturing and enjoyable way.

My daughter’s confidence has grown so much, since starting weekly tutoring sessions with Discover and Be, that she has won herself a place in a Children’s Poetry Anthology “Sense Poetry - Amazing Sensations” to be sent to The British Library and other libraries throughout the UK and Ireland. Helped by Sheila’s wealth of experience, gentle approach and dynamic teaching my daughter was encouraged to explore poetry through the senses and has created a wonderful poem to grace the shelves of readers for years to come. Thank you Discover and Be! We are extremely proud!
