When looking for extra support for my 8 year old son, it was really important to me that his needs were understood and the tutoring tailored to him to build his confidence and capability. From the moment I met Sheila, she took time to learn about my son, his passions, what he is good at and where some of the learning gaps were. All of this was important to make sure his strengths were being leveraged during the tutoring, which kept him engaged for the full 3 years he has been tutored by Discover and Be tutors. He has since had 2 different tutors and has grown hugely in confidence academically. While the SATs weren’t our main focus, he also did better than expected and I can only put it down to Sheila and her team. A special mention and huge thanks to Ellen for all her support and engaging my son so brilliantly!
— Jess, mother of an 8 year old
Sheila has tutored our daughter over the past 2 years, helping to develop her sense of self confidence in maths and contributing greatly to her improved understanding and ability in the subject. Sheila makes each lesson challenging but fun and our daughter always looks forward to and values their time together. We have seen the benefits of Sheila’s teaching style and extensive teaching knowledge, I have no hesitation in recommending her services to others.

My son Oliver has attended two Discover and Be SATs boosters and had a handful of private tuition sessions with Sheila and his confidence and ability has soared. Sheila is a calm, confident teacher and helps children focus and enjoy learning. A huge help with our exam preparation!

Rhiannon has been teaching my son music for over a year both at school and now in my home. As a school music teacher Rhiannon had a tremendous impact on my son and all those around him. She taught in an an atmosphere of enthusiasm, energy and passion such that he loved every aspect of lessons and came home wanting to learn more and more. Her concerts at the end of term were a pleasure to watch with all musicians smiling and encouraged. These included an orchestra, a ukulele group and a choir group. Rhiannon also encouraged the children to perform solos to demonstrate what they had learnt. They all appeared inspired and passionate. Rhiannon now teaches my son piano on a one to one basis. She fills our home with energy and enthusiasm as soon as she walks in the door. She teaches the theory in a such a way where the child almost forgets it is theory and so absorbs it and moves on. Her musical pieces are lively and certainly aid the practise - both for those playing and those listening. Rhiannon is one of the world’s great teachers and enablers.

Fantastic piano and vocal teaching! Now if only I could get my daughter to practise more between lessons...

contacted Sheila at Discover and Be to work with my daughter at the start of year 6, particularly in respect of maths. My daughter was lacking in confidence in her academic ability and I wanted to help her feel more positive about her learning and finish primary school feeling confident and ready to start secondary school. My daughter enjoyed all her lessons with Sheila, who understood how to catch her attention and harness her potential. The support Sheila gave her through that year was invaluable and made such a huge difference. I would recommend Discover and Be without hesitation, their professional approach married with their caring and nurturing teaching is the perfect combination.

Both Rhiannon’s and Sheila’s enthusiasm and passion for creative teaching and learning is quite infectious. Both have a wonderful rapport with the girls and boys they teach, using every opportunity to make their teaching and learning enjoyable through creative activities. They bring a sense of fun and purpose to every lesson they teach.

Rhiannon is an inspirational music teacher who established a love of music in so many of the children at our school - many of whom continued to pursue their music at secondary school and beyond. She didn’t just teach them how to play an instrument; but more importantly how to create their own music and write their own compositions.

Rhiannon is an incredibly creative person, both in and out of school; with a passion for music, art and drama. She has a creative, hands-on approach to teaching which the children respond really well to. Rhiannon’s lively and enthusiastic approach to learning is fun and memorable... she gets the best from those she works with.

Sheila is cool because she makes learning fun with games and stuff. Sheila helps me with my homework and makes me better at things I’m not confident at.
— George, Pupil, Age 10
Sheila’s energy and enthusiasm engaged George from the very outset even making grammar, punctuation and spelling fun! George worries about exams and after only a couple of sessions I have already seen an improvement in his attitude. George is now more relaxed at the prospect of tests rather than stressing and putting unnecessary pressure on himself. Sheila has helped George in developing techniques to assist with Math and English which I’m sure will serve as a solid foundation for transfer to year seven.

Sheila has been a Godsend to our two children... Her attitude to teaching is so refreshing. Her style of teaching is upbeat & fun, it is an absolute delight to have Sheila in our home. Our children have found confidence in their ability & now enjoy Maths.
Both our girls really look forward to their weekly tuition & argue as to who goes first! This is not something that I expected but am delighted by!
— Lynn, Mum of Two
Just wanted to say a huge thank you for Sam’s party today. He had the most amazing time, as did his friends. Lots of lovely comments from the parents about all the activities you provided. We are all completely shattered and I’m sure all the children are too.
— Sarah, Sam's mum
A fabulous session- Logan was able to explore the activities at his own pace and he loved getting ‘stuck into’ the sensory stations, quite literally! He enjoyed playing the musical instruments and experimenting in order to make different sounds. He was amused and happy for the entire time.
— Emma, Logan's mum
Rhiannon is a wonderful and talented instructor, she always welcomes my daughter and makes her comfortable. She is an experienced teacher with lots of patience and love. My daughter always finds her lessons good fun. She selected different pieces of music and created her own music story to help my daughter to remember the syllabus. She also allows my daughter to choose what she wants to play... In this way, my daughter has developed a passion of learning how to play the piano and practicing happily.

My five-year-old boy/girl twins have just completed their first term of private piano and ukulele lessons with Rhiannon, and I could not be more delighted with their continuing enthusiasm, and the results over such a short time. My twins are very different characters, and to see Rhi able to engage each of them, keep them both enthralled, and make the lessons so productive and fun is a pleasure to behold. She is so good at reading them, and knowing when to challenge or when to patiently move onto something else, and every lesson has run so smoothly, with the children having a great sense of accomplishment after each one.

I particularly like that every lesson has a part when the children compose some music, often illustrating a story, and also that during this creative play Rhi will often accompany them, so they get to hear the piano played beautifully every week too. With Rhi, my children are learning all about the world of music and singing, rhythm, emotion, melodies and harmonies, and most importantly how to play music. Thank you!
— Deborah, Mum of Twins
Sheila was my tutor leading up to my entrance exams and SATS. I really like Sheila, she explained things slowly and helped me when I didn’t understand things. We always had fun in the lesson too. She helped me to understand fractions which I was really stuck on. I would recommend having Sheila as your tutor because she will help you understand and also have fun too!
— Alicia, Year 6
I approached Discover & Be to help with my eldest daughter in building her confidence, who was at that time transitioning at the end of Year 3 to a different school. We were carefully matched with Charlotte who was absolutely perfect for Florence. It was seen as a great treat to have an hour with her each week. Each session had clearly been well planned in advance and careful consideration was given to the areas of learning at school. Charlotte also made the sessions fun and incorporated Florence’s interests into each lesson. I couldn’t recommend Discover & Be highly enough.
— Becca, mother of Florence
Both of my boys have been taught by Mrs Harman for years - both at school and now through Discover and Be. They have piano lessons. Mrs Harman is inspiring and is like a ball of energy that comes into our home and lights it up and no one can but help being caught up in it. Lessons are adapted to suit both boys enthusiasm and interest. With her passion and encouragement both are still enthusiastic and one has even chosen music as a GCSE option. Sounds of Bohemian Rhapsody and Walking in the Air coming from the lounge played by them was magical. Thank you x
