Tom, Academic and Guitar, Piano and Music Production tutor
Tom is a qualified Music teacher with experience in teaching Science, as well as covering for a range of subjects across the curriculum, including English and Maths. He loves helping and mentoring people of all ages to fulfil their musical dreams in whatever form that may take, and is patient when helping students achieve their academic goals.
Tom has always had a passion for music. This has taken many forms - with experience playing guitar and bass in bands, as well as piano, DJing professionally, as well as music production, recording, mixing and mastering.
After completing a BA in Music Technology with Business and Management at the University of Sussex in 2018 Tom continued studying at Sussex to complete initial teacher training. He obtained a PGCE in Secondary Music in July 2020.
During his training and placements as a Music teacher Tom greatly enjoyed and thrived in helping students with ensemble performances, and composition coursework. He was particularly confident in aiding them in realising their creative musical visions and accompanying them in their musical journeys – working both in groups or one to one.
Tom went on to take the role of Cover Supervisor at Ifield Community College during which he had to be flexible, adapting to teach many different subjects across the curriculum. This led to him frequently teaching Science and Maths classes.
It was while teaching Science that his affinity for the subject was realised, and led to him being offered subject knowledge enhancement for physics, with the aim of becoming a Science teacher. Tom qualified to teach Science in 2021.
In his free time, music remains Tom’s main passion. From 2020, he began running a small label and radio show (LTM) with some of his peers, and became a resident DJ for the LTM show on Lahmacun Radio, producing and editing many shows. Tom also helped to curate and master/ quality control two compilation releases which featured musical contributions from musicians around the world as well as himself, and put them out with all profits going to charities Mind, Papyrus and Help Musicians.
