Why Drum Lessons are So Good For Kids

Anyone who has children has seen them having fun smashing away on a toy drum or a saucepan but learning to play drums in a more formal way can have some seriously impressive benefits!

We have seen first hand how happy playing drums makes all our drum students and we get lots of positive feedback from the parents but there is more to it than just having fun.

Confidence Building

Learning and getting better at anything is a confidence booster, starting something hard and “getting it” can do wonders for a child’s confidence. However, the power and sound of drums adds something a little more to it. A “shy” child can really feel powerful and strong behind the drum kit, it’s a fortress of noise and it really can have a profound affect!

Stress and Anxiety

We all know our kids are exposed to more stress than perhaps we were as children. We also know that anxiety and depression are a problem for young people. Drum lessons can really help! The simple act of playing the drums can be a massive stress reliever but the level of focus needed can help create what is known as “flow” where the child has no room to think about day to day worries. A period of “flow” can play a big role in combating anxiety and depression. To top it all off playing the drums is quite physical and a good drum lesson can leave kids on quite a high.

Motor Skills

There is no doubt learning to play the drums requires learned co-ordination but it goes deeper than that. It actually helps develop connections between the brain’s visual triggers and the body’s muscles. Research shows that drummers have better control of their motor functions, are more dexterous, have faster reactions and steadier hands! In short, learning to play the drums can have a big impact on a child’s motor skills.

Getting Fit

The physical nature of playing the drums is great exercise, especially for kids who may not like more traditional team sports and activities. If you don’t believe us, why not book an adult taster session and see how tired you are afterwards!

The list actually goes on and on from lifelong learning they can use for years to come to learning to be “in the moment” and focus, to making friends, joining a band and so much more! Also remember, there are lots of guitarists out there but not enough drummers. A young drummer looking for a band will never be short of offers at school and beyond.
