Peter Mansfield, Academic Tutor
Peter has been tutoring students in mathematics for the last 16 years and during this time has helped students of all ages further their understanding and confidence in the subject.
After leaving university with Mathematics degree he went straight into teaching secondary mathematics for six years in inner London schools.
From there he took a change in career and went into IT, initially as a computer programmer and then progressing into more managerial roles.
Having enjoyed training colleagues and clients, it became an obvious step to return to full time teaching, this time as a private tutor. As well as tutoring school students away from the school environment, Peter also helps local schools with mathematics intervention support. He has also run Adult Education numeracy classes and designed and run a course specifically to help parents of KS3 children to understand some of the things their children were bringing home as homework!
While most of his students are aged between 10 and 18, he is happy to teach students of all ages and abilities from primary through supporting university students with their maths through to helping adults gain insight where they thought they would not succeed.
Peter feels that all students are capable of enjoying and being confident in mathematics. If a student works in the right environment and with suitable tools, they cannot help but develop the ability to think and talk with understanding about this often abstract subject. The individual nature of the tuition allows uncertainties to be seen more easily and addressed sooner - sometimes a small change in the way an idea is described can lead to a much larger change in a student’s confidence.
In his spare time Peter can be seen playing trombone with the Mid Sussex Brass Band where he also conducts the thriving Youth Band!
