Hazel Groves, Academic Tutor
Hazel was born and bred in Hertfordshire, and moved to Sussex - for love - after meeting her husband. Having moved to Sussex in 2009, she qualified as a teacher in July 2010. Hazel spent seven years working in a special school for those with Autistic Spectrum Conditions. This nurtured her love of creating 'moments' to talk about, because in that environment, if learning wasn't the most exciting thing going on, then the children weren't interested! She loves tapping in to children's natural curiosity, and often learns something herself along the way.
Hazel is a mother of three, with her eldest son having just started school. Since having children, Hazel has worked part-time in a mainstream primary school teaching across KS2. Needless to say, the rest of her time is taken up with her younger twins - who are into everything! Before children, Hazel’s hobbies included playing music; she is grade 8 on both the flute and the bassoon, and completed a BA (Hons) Theology, Music and Worship.
Hazel’s work in a special school gave her a special interest and focus on education for a purpose. She likes to make learning purposeful, functional and hands on. Hazel has worked with children with various barriers to learning including ADHD, PDA, dyslexia and attachment difficulties. She has a special interest in the area of maths, as this is a subject she has always enjoyed. She is currently the maths lead at her present school.
