Catherine Hawtin, Academic Tutor

Catherine grew up in Sussex and, after A-Levels, completed an Art Foundation course before going on to study Fine Art with languages at De Montfort University in Leicester. She then worked as a Learning Support Assistant before completing her PGCE at University College Chichester. Catherine then taught in primary schools in Sussex and Hampshire for 17 years, around having her two children.

Working as a teaching assistant made me realise that what I wanted to do was teach. I love helping children realise their full potential and surprise themselves with what they can achieve.

Catherine has taught every year group from Reception to year 6 and was the SENDCo (Special Needs and Disability Co-ordinator ) in her last school, forming part of the Senior Leadership Team.

When she moved back to Sussex, Catherine wanted to ensure she could spend more time with her own children and found that tutoring offered the flexibility she was looking for, whilst still being a rewarding career.

“One-to-one tuition allows me to give time to a single child that just isn’t possible within a class environment. It offers the chance to really identify what the child is struggling with and what their next steps should be. This is truly personalised learning on a level that just can’t be achieved in a classroom. I love to see the children’s pride when they achieve things they never thought they would.”

Catherine tutors alongside running her craft workshop and party business The Little Crafty Company. She is still a keen artist and in her spare time performs with local theatre companies, as well as designing and building sets .
