Catherine Dalberg, Academic Tutor
Catherine came into teaching later on in life after working in various safeguarding children roles which ranged from doing assessments to make sure people were suitable to volunteer with children; providing advice on safeguarding issues and training people on best practice when working with children.
Catherine completed a PGCE in Primary Education at the University of Brighton and subsequently went on to teach Upper Key Stage 2 for a number of years. She went on to do supply work in various schools around Brighton whilst starting a property company with her husband (which now takes up the majority of her time). She has taught every year group from Reception to Year 6 and particularly enjoys harnessing children's love of literacy across the year groups.
The main reason why Catherine enjoys tutoring children is the opportunity it gives her to unpick what children are struggling to understand in a way that is difficult to do as a class teacher. She feels that, as a tutor, you can identify the child's needs and creatively tailor how you approach a task incorporating what a child is interested in. Catherine makes each session fun to engage children and develop their understanding. She finds it particularly satisfying to see a child's self esteem grow when they attempt areas of learning they didn't think they could tackle.
When Catherine's not working, she can be found exploring new places in a camper van, seeing friends and family or in her garden.
