Jo Osborne Academic Tutor

Jo Osborne, Academic Tutor

Jo is a true Sussex girl - she grew up in Cuckfield, West Sussex and attended local schools and sixth-form college before embarking on a teaching degree at the University of Brighton. Jo discovered she wanted to become a teacher after all the fun she had working with children at church; singing songs, playing games, making things and learning together.

“I think I learnt just as much from the children, as they did from me… maybe even more!”

Jo has more than 10 years experience in the teaching profession. She has taught in a variety of schools across Sussex, spanning primary into Key Stage 3 (lower secondary). Jo decided to work part-time following the arrival of her daughter, Amélie.

“Children grow up so fast and I wanted to be able to spend as much time with Amélie as possible. I love being her mum and I love our days together.”

A regular mummy at our Discover and Be messy play, music and movement sessions, Jo jumped at the chance to join the academic tutoring team as she loves our creative and hands-on approach to teaching and learning.

Sheila Datoo, co-founder of Discover and Be, knew that Jo would fit in well with the company's ethos: “Watching Jo interact imaginatively and creatively with her daughter, Amélie as well as with many other children in our sessions, we knew she would be a valuable addition to the Discover and Be team.”

Jo is creative outside the classroom as well as in, enjoying sewing, crafting, camping and baking (she’s good – we’ve tried it!). Jo loves being outdoors whatever the weather - be it sunny beach days or muddy welly walks in the woods. Jo relishes the opportunity to take on more Discover and Be pupils over the coming months.

Jo specialises in academic tutoring for primary aged children in Sussex. If you'd like to find out about tutoring or any other aspect of Discover and Be's work, please get in touch.

My daughter had reached year four at primary and found herself struggling with maths. Though I tried to help we just ended up arguing and her refusing to engage. I decided a tutor could help her with specific areas and Jo started helping out every week. With Jo my daughter was always interested, engaged and then applied what she had learnt at home and school. Mostly her confidence has come on so much in a subject where she would pretend illness to miss the class at school. Thank you Jo, Willow sees you as her friend and I am so happy to see her achieving where she didn’t think she could.

We are thrilled to have found Discover & Be. Our 10 year old son has tuition lessons once a week and thoroughly enjoys and looks forward to them. Jo is very experienced and knowledgeable and we couldn’t be happier with her. Jo is always happy if I ask her to help/support our son with a specific topic or homework task, and she always has the appropriate resources and work for him. I keep Jo updated with school reports which she will then work from and focus on those areas our son needs more help and encouragement. Jo is always bubbly and punctual and most importantly is really building our son’s confidence up. Highly recommend *****
